Not Techno SavvyThu, January 28, 2010 @ 11:50AM With the iPad coming out, I seem to keep having discussions with fellow blogger Art Smith about why I don't have some sort of ebook reader and why I'm hanging onto "dead trees." For one thing, books smell good. I can't explain it properly, but they do. But my major hang-up with those devices is that I spend too much of my life as it is on the computer due to work. I cannot spend anymore of it reading for hours on end on yet another computer screen. Art tells me these devices do something to try to simulate a paper page. And yet it's still a simulation. It's not a paper page. While I've not read a book on one of the ereaders, I have had to read pdfs of books before. And it's a chore. I would much rather read an actual book. I also cannot imagine cuddling up on the couch with my kids and reading one of their favorite picture books - on a computer screen.

This winter is nothing compared to when we were kidsTue, February 16, 2010 @ 2:24PM By now it is safe to say most people are sick of the winter. School children have been stuck at home for what seems like the better part of a month, the drive to work for many has become a daily adventure and it seems the snow is just going never to end. As bad as it seems, it’s nothing if one consider how bad the winter of 1977 -78 was. “When I was your age” is a favorite statement of parents everywhere. In the case of bad winters I think we have the youths of today beat. Let’s take a look at the winter that truly seemed like it was never going to end. First a blizzard struck the area on Jan 26 effectively shutting the region down for the next five days. It was the worst storm in Ohio history and was so bad the National Guard was activated to open roads and rescue people. In all, 51 people died in the storm in Ohio alone. It was cold. Really cold. For a time the temperature dropped into the teens, the MINUS teens.

Great military band showMon, March 8, 2010 @ 10:01AM The 30-plus-member U.S. Air Force Band of Flight from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base performed Saturday evening before a packed house at West Virginia University at Parkersburg. The 500-plus people at the concert were treated to a fantastic show, which included several patriotic numbers as well as a salute to each branch of the military. I have to admit, I've always thought of the Mid-Ohio Valley as being a strong Army and Marine Corps area, so I was surprised by the large number of Air Force veterans who stood when their service theme was played. The News and Sentinel, along with WVUP, sponsored the performance, and the newspaper couldn't have been happier with the turnout and the program, the first part of which dealt with more symphonic-like numbers with a Latin theme and the second half with more popular numbers.
